Types and Technical Variants of Metering Pumps

Diaphragm Metering Pumps

In diaphragm metering pumps, the fluid is separated from the drive by a diaphragm. This design is particularly suitable for:

  • corrosive fluids
  • toxic media
  • Applications with strict leakage requirements
  • defined HSE requirements

Technical advantage: The pump head remains hermetically sealed from the drive, making it significantly easier to control leakage than with open piston systems.

Piston Metering Pumps

Piston metering pumps operate using direct piston displacement. They are the preferred choice when:

  • higher pressures are required
  • defined high-pressure metering is required
  • the medium allows for the seal design

Technical difference: The sealing design requires more maintenance; however, the pump’s strengths lie in its pressure range and direct piston hydraulics.

Media, Valve Dynamics, and Dosing Behavior

Metering pumps operate accurately only when the fluid and the pump's hydraulic system are compatible. Flow rate alone is not a sufficient selection criterion.

Chemically aggressive media

Acids, alkalis, and oxidizing agents may only be used if their compatibility has been confirmed with:

  • pump head
  • Diaphragm or packing
  • Valve seat
  • sealing system

Solvents and media containing VOCs

Media containing solvents can affect seals, elastomers, and, in some cases, explosion protection. In such cases, an additional ATEX assessment is required.

High-viscosity fluids

Increasing viscosity changes:

  • Stroke dynamics

As a result, the actual metering capacity shifts if the load condition is not clearly defined.

Gas Content and Shear-Sensitive Media

Gas-laden media can affect dosing accuracy. Shear-sensitive media require a controlled stroke frequency to prevent product degradation caused by unnecessary stress.

Media containing solids

Solids are generally a major cause of wear in metering pumps. They are permitted only within defined limits, as valves, seating surfaces, and seals are sensitive to them.

Diaphragm Design

Diaphragm metering pumps achieve a specified leakage target by separating the fluid from the drive. For critical applications, double-diaphragm systems with leakage monitoring can be used.

Piston Design

Piston metering pumps are available with either a packing seal or a mechanical seal. In this context, leakage characteristics, maintenance intervals, and sealing strategies must be explicitly defined.
